Both accept an unenrolled deed poll — correctly worded, signed and witnessed — as evidence of a name change. HM Passport Office wants the original wet-ink document, and if it's freshly dated, may also ask for a document showing your new name already in use.

No — enrolment is optional and doesn't add legal validity. It only publishes your change in the London Gazette. This is an unenrolled deed poll, the form most people use.

Can I change a child's name with this?

Accepted Answer

No — this product is for adults (18+) changing their own name only. Changing a child's name needs the consent of everyone with parental responsibility and separate, specialist handling.

How is it signed?

Accepted Answer

As a deed: you sign in the presence of one independent witness, who also signs and gives their name, address and occupation.

Can I use this to adopt a title I don't hold?

Accepted Answer

No — a deed poll must never be used to imply a title, rank or qualification you don't actually hold. If your new name reads that way, you'll be asked to confirm you hold it before the document is generated.
